Home to one of the world’s largest populations of lesser flamingos, Lake Bogoria was established as a protected National Reserve in 1973. It’s one of three interlinked lakes in the Rift Valley, together with Lake Nakuru and Lake Elementaita. Lake Bogoria descends to just 10 metres in depth while stretching 34 kilometres in length, with its saline, alkaline waters being framed by the Kesubo Swamp to the north and the Siracho Escarpment to the east.
Geysers and hot springs dot the lake’s shores, with some erupting as high as five metres to create a dramatic natural spectacle. Lake Bogoria has also been designated as a Ramsar site for its exceptional birdwatching, with African spoonbills, hornbills and starlings among its highlights. Buffalos, zebras and spotted hyenas also inhabit the reserve, as does a herd of greater kudu.
