Famed for its huge flocks of pink-tinged flamingos, Lake Nakuru is one of the most famous of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley lakes. It’s protected within the Lake Nakuru National Park, which is also home to black and white rhinos, buffalos, leopards and lions. More than 450 species of birds can be spotted within its bounds, including pelicans and cormorants, while warthogs and baboons can be seen in the surrounding forest.
Just south of Lake Nakuru is Lake Naivasha, another popular birdwatching destination surrounded by rich swamplands. Its southern shores are marked by the Njorowa Gorge, which forms the entrance to Hell’s Gate National Park where you can cycle alongside wild zebra, hartebeest and Thomson’s gazelle. Together with Lake Nakuru, its proximity to Nairobi makes it an ideal destination for wildlife viewing for those short on time or en route to Kenya’s north.
