Located in Kenya’s remote northern frontier, Lake Turkana forms a huge inland sea across the Rift Valley. It’s the largest permanent desert lake in the world and ringed by three national parks that have collectively been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It’s an important resting point for migratory birds, greater flamingos and African skimmers while providing a breeding ground for hippopotamus and Nile crocodile. In fact, Lake Turkana boasts one of the world’s largest crocodile populations and some of its biggest specimens.
Lake Turkana has been referred to as “The Jade Sea” due to the enchanting colour of its water and is home to the Nabiyotum crater, considered by many to be the “cradle of humankind”. It’s also populated by the intriguing Turkana tribal communities who’ve retained their ancient customs in this other-worldly landscape.
