MERU NATIONAL PARK
Bisected by no less than 13 rivers, Meru National Park straddles the equator to the northeast of Nairobi and is one of Kenya’s lesser-known parks. It’s a particularly beautiful part of the country, with wide-open plains, dense woodlands and mountain-fed streams fringed by doum palms.
Lions, elephants, black rhinos and zebras all inhabit Meru National Park, together with gazelle, oryx and cheetahs. Hippos and crocodiles wallow in the rivers while the park’s more than 300 species of birds include Pel’s fishing owl, brown-backed woodpeckers and red-necked falcons.
Meru National Park is famed as the setting for Joy Adamson’s book “Born Free”, which tells the story of her family’s life and research into lions and cheetahs. Lovers of the book can visit the grave of “Elsa”, the most well-known lioness while being treated to exceptional views of Mount Kenya.
