One of the biggest national parks in Kenya, Tsavo East lies in the country’s southwest, en route between Nairobi and Mombasa. It encompasses sprawling desert plains that provide a habitat for Cape buffalo, cheetahs, giraffes and impala, as well as vervet monkeys, white-tailed mongoose and black rhinoceros.
A highlight of visiting the park is spotting its unique Tsavo lions, with the adult males often completely lacking a mane. More than 500 bird species have been recorded in Tsavo East National Park, including kestrels, buzzards and kingfishers, not to mention a healthy population of ostriches.
Aside from its wildlife wonders, Tsavo East National Park also encompasses a 1.6-kilometre inselberg known as the Mudanda Rock and the world’s longest lava flow - Yatta Plateau. Exceptional wildlife-viewing can be enjoyed along the palm-fringed Gala River, which is also home to the whitewater rapids of Lugard Falls.
