Marked by volcanic cones, black lava flows and dense vegetation, Tsavo West National Park encompasses a more wooded, hilly landscape than its sister reserve, Tsavo East National Park. It’s located midway between Nairobi and Mombasa, making it a popular wildlife-viewing destination for those travelling between the Kenyan capital and the Indian Ocean port.
Together, the two parks form the Tsavo Conservation Area, home to unique Tsavo lions whose males are often completely lacking a mane. Eastern black rhinoceros, hippopotamus and elephant all call Tsavo West “home”, as do predators such as leopards and lions.
Adding to its exceptional wildlife viewing is the park’s stunning scenery, with highlights including the Mzima Springs, the Chaimu Crater and the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. Tsavo West National Park is also renowned for its rock climbing, accompanied by sightings of elephants roaming the plains below and birds of prey circling the thermals above.
