Selous Game Reserve

SELOUS GAME RESERVE | VENCHA TRAVEL

Sprawling across more than 54,000 square kilometres, the Selous Game Reserve is around four times the size of the Serengeti and one of the largest game reserves in Africa. It’s been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exceptional wildlife diversity, with large populations of zebra, giraffe and around 4,000 lions found here.

Hippos, rhinos and buffalos can also be spotted on the Acacia savanna and in the Miombo woodlands while more than 440 bird species have been recorded. African skimmers, giant kingfishers and Malagasy squacco herons flock to the wetlands, with vervet monkeys and baboons inhabiting the lush forests. The Rufiji River is the heart of all the wildlife-watching action, with birds and mammals alike coming to refuel along its banks.

While night safaris aren’t permitted in Selous’ pristine landscapes, walking safaris are, allowing you to gain a completely different perspective. Get up close to species that would otherwise be spooked by a jeep engine and learn about the rich plant life that supports the reserve’s game population.
