Perched on the shores of Lake Albert in northwest Uganda, Murchison Falls National Park is named for a spectacular cascade along the Victoria Nile River. It holds the title of “Uganda’s largest national park” while providing a home for elephants, lions and Rothschild’s giraffe.
A highlight of visiting the park is seeing the waters of the Nile dramatically surging through its narrow gap before plunging 43 metres into a swirling pool below. Rare shoe-billed stork, dwarf kingfishers and Goliath herons can be seen wading in the calmer waters, alongside wallowing hippos and Uganda’s largest population of Nile crocodiles. Safaris in Murchison Falls National Park may also include a trek through the mahogany forest of Kaniyo Pabidi to watch as chimpanzees play in the trees above.
