Encompassing 15,750 square kilometres of grasslands, savanna, riverine forests and kopjes, the Serengeti is one of the world’s most iconic safari destinations. It provides the backdrop to the Great Wildebeest Migration when millions of wildebeest and zebras make the long journey north in pursuit of fresh grazing pastures while being pursued by large numbers of big predators.
The Serengeti National Park is home to approximately 70 large mammals, including the “Big Five”, hippos, impala and Maasai giraffe. Vervet monkeys, olive baboons and black-and-white colobus also inhabit the lush forests along the Grumeti River while more than 500 species of birds have been recorded within the park’s bounds.
Together with Loliondo Game Controlled Area, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Maswa Game Reserve, the Grumeti Game Controlled Area, the Ikorongo Game Controlled Area, and the Masai Mara National Reserve, the Serengeti forms part of the 35,000-square-kilometre Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Aside from daily game drives and guided walks, its spectacular landscapes can also be experienced from the air during a once-in-a-lifetime hot air balloon safari.
